Fifteen-year-old Sam Calder joins the first trade caravan across the newly cleared west road to Rill. Two trucks, one trailer, and a careful plan should prove the old route useful—until a wheel bearing fails miles from help and thirty-six boxes have to go somewhere.
Rill is alive, connected, and not waiting to be rescued. Cheaper goods could help families on both sides of the road. They could also take away the routine sales that keep local repair shops alive. The people who stayed have built lives around other roads, and not everyone wants the old one back.
While Sam learns that reopening is not one decision, a damaged archive map changes the mystery again: the North Link was never the whole road. It was one branch of something larger.
