The Mountain Mile survey is carefully planned, adult-led, and still vulnerable to changing conditions. Sam wants twenty more minutes. The mountain does not care whether the decision sounded reasonable when it was made.
Inside the story
MOUNTAIN MILE • ABOVE BLACKWOOD
THE TURNAROUND IS WRITTEN IN RED.
THE EVIDENCE IS TWENTY MINUTES AHEAD.
THE WEATHER IS ALREADY MOVING.
Fourteen-year-old Sam Calder joins a supervised Alder-Fenwick expedition into the high country. He knows the old road better than some adults in the group. He is still only a participant—and the agreed turnaround is written in red.
Beyond Rock Gate, falling stone, broken retaining walls, and a deliberately destroyed bridge approach lead toward a dispatch shelter that may hold the answer Sam wants. It is close enough to argue for twenty more minutes.
They find the evidence: a Compact naming three communities and calling the closure temporary. Then the weather catches them on the descent, Mara is hurt, and Sam must face the cost of a reasonable decision that spent the margin meant to bring everyone home.
The evidence was close. The way home was not.
Sam’s progression
Sam begins to understand margin as something preserved for the unknown—not spare time waiting to be spent.Reader map after Book 5
