The shared survey has four different Mile Sixes. When a field team becomes overdue, knowing which “Six” somebody meant becomes more than a map problem.
Inside the story
CEDAR HOLLOW • PAST RILL SIX
FOUR MAPS. FOUR MILE SIXES.
ONE SURVEY CREW HAS NOT CHECKED IN.
SAM CIRCLED THE WRONG PLACE.
Sixteen-year-old Sam Calder joins a survey meant to build the first shared map between Alder, Fenwick, and Rill. When another crew follows an old service sheet down Cedar Branch and misses every check-in, Sam circles the wrong place. His thirteen-year-old sister June finds the right search corridor.
Past Rill Mile Six, an orange tent waits beside a creek where the map still shows a bridge. The crew is safe. The map was accurate when it was drawn. The road is not connected now—and every conflicting marker may be correct inside the system that produced it.
To make one map people can trust, Sam must stop hunting for the single true version and record what every number means. Then an original survey index points beyond the paper's edge toward two words no current map can place: ZERO HOUSE.
A map can be accurate and still lead somewhere you cannot go.
