The protagonist

Sam Calder grows up with the map.

Sam is ten when he notices that Alder’s road, ditch, and map do not agree. He begins with the simplest possible question: is the road really there?

Every book moves one year forward. The questions grow with him. At eleven, he has to turn back voluntarily. At fourteen, he learns what margin costs when conditions change. At sixteen, he has to hold several correct maps at once. At eighteen, he has to separate finding information from having authority over it. At nineteen, the final question is who will maintain the system after he leaves.

That progression is the spine of the series. Sam does not become less curious. He becomes better at living with what curiosity creates.

The people around the road

Mara

Practical, mechanical, and increasingly independent. Her path into Public Works and structures becomes as real as Sam’s route work.

June

Sam’s younger sister develops from observer to map/source specialist. Her strength is context: what a number, name, or spoken direction means where it came from.

Cal

Fenwick road worker and field companion whose growing responsibilities eventually make his absence from expeditions as meaningful as his presence in the early books.

Ruth, Lena & the adults

They provide authority, expertise, preservation, and boundaries without turning Sam into a passive passenger.

I write the kind of books I enjoy — full of wonder, big questions, and just enough answers to keep the pages turning.

When I’m not writing, I’m usually reading, walking, or staring at the sky, letting a new idea take shape.

What the series is not

The road never becomes a prize.

The final goal is not to conquer the route, prove every closure foolish, or restore one “correct” historical map. Roads can be useful, broken, seasonal, limited, intentionally closed, or waiting for review.

The series keeps its focus on people doing the work: inspecting, recording, carrying, repairing, comparing evidence, changing plans, and deciding together what a connection is for.
