The Road Through Blackwood

The warning was old. The danger was not.

Which route is real?

Blackwood offers two old routes and two different warnings. One says slide. One says flood. Sam, Mara, Cal, and June have to stop asking which map is wrong and start asking what each warning belongs to.

Inside the story

BLACKWOOD • NORTH OF FENWICK

THE MAPS DISAGREE.

THE ARROWS POINT BOTH WAYS.

THE FOREST HIDES THE REASON.

Thirteen-year-old Sam Calder enters Blackwood with Mara and Cal to learn why two old route signs point travelers toward two different dangers. One branch climbs an unstable slope. The other follows flood ground beneath a forest thick enough to erase the road.

Sam decides one sign must be wrong. Then leaves give way above a collapsed culvert, and the quiet arrows begin to look less like warnings than instructions for a forgotten traffic system.

Inside an abandoned control station, they find a Closure Order bearing three stamps. Alder is one. Fenwick is another. The third proves the road's history was never owned by a single town—even if its name is gone.

Alder was only one of them.

Sam’s progression

Conflicting evidence becomes something to classify, not something to force into one answer.
