Mile Twenty-Four
The road did not end. Somebody just stopped drawing it.
Is it there?
In Alder, the North Road ends at Mile 23. The ditch does not. When ten-year-old Sam Calder finds evidence that the road continues, one small contradiction becomes the beginning of a much larger journey.
Inside the story
ALDER • THE NORTH ROAD
THE NORTH ROAD ENDS AT MILE 23.
EVERY MAP IN ALDER AGREES.
THE STONE IN THE BRUSH SAYS 24.
Ten-year-old Sam Calder notices what roads reveal: ditches, cut banks, and old pavement. Beyond Alder's END OF ROAD barrier, every clue points north. When he slips past it, he finds a moss-covered stone marker cut with one impossible number: 24.
He means to turn back. Then rain floods the crossing behind him, and his friend Mara arrives with a pack, a note left at home, and better questions. Their only supported route leads farther north—past a wall repaired decades too late and into a stone shelter no map admits exists.
Getting home will take more than following the road. Sam must learn to distinguish evidence from the answer he wants before the next bend costs him more than he can afford.
A blank place on a map is not an empty place.
Sam’s progression
